In the middle of Europe there is asmall nation, of about 5,000,000 people. These people live in a country namedSlovakia. Actually the name should be Szlovákia, but thanks to abnormal chauvinism presented bysome minor fractions of people, the name of this country remained SlovenskáRepublika (SR). However, notonly Slovaks live in this marvelous country. Here one can find plenty ofdifferent nationalities, like Czech, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, German and ofcourse, the original inhabitants of this piece of land; the Hungarians. Thepopulation of Hungarians is more than 12%, but, however, they are stilldiscriminated and oppressed by the government of the SR, which refuses to givethe Hungarian minority autonomy in southern parts of this country.
To understand this clear and obviousproblem and the never-ending fight between these different nations, we need toget back to 1920 to Trianon Treaty, where the Czechoslovak Republic was firstestablished on the debris of the former great Austrian-Hungarian Empire, whichof course was unfair and wretched, mostly because huge parts of Hungary weretaken and added to the new state. This was never accepted by the real Hungarianpatriots, who all the time, even now, call for revision of these act. Theliberal fractions of Hungarians already gave up of this effort and were sogenerous to give this almost 50,000km2 to their ex-fellow countrymen as a gift, although it was never published. Among Hungarians it is a public secret.
But this great gesture remainedforgotten. Not only Slovak chauvinist groups forced the Hungarian politicalparty (SMK) to leave to opposition, but also forced them to speak Slovak inParliament and discriminated inhabitants of Hungarian descent. Hungarianuniversity built from founds of SR is in danger, because of the possibility ofinterception of finances from state exchequer. This also enablesthe progress of Hungarian school system in Slovak Republic. Also the Slovakgovernment refuses to settle bilingual names of cities and villages throughoutthe whole country not just in southern parts of the state. These are, however, not the only problems. The major discrimination embody in the persecution ofall the Slovaks who speak Hungarian.Such discrimination is so unbearable, that the poorHungarian-speaking inhabitants have to go the entire way to internationaltribunals in Haag or Strasburg to point out how badly they are treated for alltheir kindness. Of course Europe is irritated of such an unrespectful behaviorof Slovak government. They’ve already sent quite a few experts to Slovakia(recently it was Mr. Swoboda) to examine the whole situation. His reports wereextremely confusing and annoying for the rest of Europe. Chauvinist groups, whohave the power now, do everything to wipe out all Hungarian population inSlovakia. According to many European politics, the word genocide is not farfrom what’s going around now in Slovak Republic.
