Deadbolt "Voodoo Trucker" 2000
Every now and then a band comes along that takes a few seeminglyunrelated genres and finds a way to tie them together on an album; fromthe opening notes of "Billy's Dead," one's apt to have the lurkingfeeling of darkness until the tongue-in-cheek lyrics begin. San Diego'sDeadbolt continues its tradition of theme-based recordings with VoodooTrucker, an offering full of stories of death, curses, andtruckers-gone-wrong. Imagine the Ventures playing spooky surf musicbehind a dry,Dragnet-style narrative of both supernatural tales andeveryday trucker situations. Songs such as "the Mocker" and "Let'sTruck" contain conversations as spoken through C.B. radios, while"Whereabouts Unknown" describes many C.B. radio terms and lingo overthe top of clean, slinky guitar lines and a thick, driving bass.Because the approach, tempo, and key never changes throughout thealbum, there's not much variation, and a lack of any challenging guitarleads may leave some listeners flat; however, the music itself is moreabout creating a moody atmospheric background for the Edgar AllanPoe-like stories, and, on most of the songs, it comes together quitewell. "Truck Driving S.O.B." is one of the more catchy tunes, characterizing the typical habits and lifestyle commonly associatedwith truckers, while "McGortsy" delves into a twisted tale of murderand bodies hanging from trees. A dark sense of humor accompanied with astark musical landscape definitely makes this one of Deadbolt's moreintriguing and entertaining releases. ~ Ian Trumbull, All Music Guide

Deadbolt "Shrunken Head" 1993 (Headhunter Rec)
"Only the person who does my laundry knows how much terror this CDstrikes in me. Ever since I heard "Hank Watson Stalks the Earth" I'vehad nightmares of being tortured by rabid poodles. After listening to"Down in the Lab", I developed a twitch in my right eye and startedwalking with a limp (that was four years ago). If there is a god, thenwhy is Deadbolt allowed to torment me? This music gives me theheebie-jeebies. I used to be a productive member of society, but afterlistening to Deadbolt I had to quit my job as a stockbroker and findpart-time work at a mortuary.
I think the members of Deadbolt arebad people- someone should spank them." Reviewer: Chad Bagley "Chad"(Shanghai China/Provo, UT)

Deadbolt "Tiki Man" 1994 (Headhunter Rec)
I don't know if you can get the full effect of Deadbolt without seeingthem live. I've seen them many times (My home town at the time wasusually their first tour stop from San Diego) and I've hung out withthem a few times (more on that later). Their live show consists of morefog than you can possibly imagine. Harley Davidson (his real birth name, by the way) has an ongoingschtick where he sprays his pompadour about a hundred times throughoutthe show. His guitar is set up somehow with an iron bar on it, so thatat the highlight of the show he brings out a power saw and "plays"guitar with it, spraying a torrent of sparks into the crowd.
At onepoint (I think right after Tiki Man came out) they toured with two bassplayers - "The Wall of Thunder," they called it. Les Vegas (thedrummer) later started a ritual where he would leave his drum kit, theband would leave the stage and he played some gypsy music (I think itwas) on a handheld tape recorder and danced practically naked withrubber snakes and dolls. Some nights he would do this many, many times.Les left the band after Tijuana Hit Squad. I heard he moved to LasVegas (of course) and became seriously mentally ill and the bandcouldn't even locate him.
My band opened for Deadbolt once. We wereat the gig early and there was plenty of time with no audience. Ifthese guys are just "playing parts," I can guarantee you they neverstepped out of character. I tend to believe their stage personalitiesare who they really are. I dated a girl once who had visited them attheir home, and she reported their house was full of bullet holes.
Myfavorite Harley story was after a show I was hanging out at a fellowmusician's house and the band showed up. Harley had an oxygen mask, which was not hooked up to anything, but the tube led to his backpocket. He would reach for the mask and breathe deeply every now andthen, recreating Dennis Hopper's character from Blue Velvet. Early inthe evening, Harley decided he didn't much like me, and spent most ofthe night trying to scare the hell out of me. I don't know if he wasjust having fun or for real, but I did worry a bit that if I hadn'tbeen amongst friends, Deadbolt might've tied me up and thrown me in theback of their van....
I guess what I'm saying is, if you ever get the chance, you must go see Deadbolt live. - story by Billy K

Deadbolt "Tijuana Hit Squad" 1996 (Headhunter Rec)
Let's say there were some guys that kill for a living, and these guysgot caught and went into the witness relocation program. But after thegoverment checks stopped coming they had to do something...."let'sstart a band" one says, "what will we sing about?" asks another. "wellabout what we used to do! of course!" and thus started the scariestband in the world. they could tie me up,cut off my ear and cover me ingasoline any day! Deadbolt "Zulu Death Mask" 1998
..GETTING DRUNK IN THE DESERT, DRIVING THRU THE DESERT TO VEGAS, GOINGON HOMICIDAL RAMPAGES DRESSED UP LIKE PATCHES, & GOING TO TIJUANA(AT YOUR OWN RISK).
Here is Deadbolt's fourth album, continuing to cement their image as"the world's scariest band." These tough guys from San Diego tell talesof corruption, revenge, exotic rituals, and psychotic clowns ("the onlygood clown is a dead clown"), all over a background of dark surf-styleguitar melodies. Deadbolt is one of the few bands I've seen with oneguitarist and two bass players. The instrumental parts on this one arereal laid-back and heavy, but also kinda catchy, which works well withthe low-key vocals. So if you're not just playing this as surfybackground music but actually paying attention to the storylines inthese tunes, the benefit is that you get the jokes. Definitely not forthe politically correct crowd, which is another reason why these guysare tops in my book. Their stage act also includes all kinds of funlike severed heads, circlesaw-grinder spark shows, and even snakedancing. And this disc has a triple image cover, with a prism-typeplastic cover that makes the image change when you move it around.
