Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Like many late-'90s metal bands, System of a Down struck a balancebetween '80s underground thrash metal and metallic early-'90salternative rockers like Jane's Addiction. Their dark, neo-gothicalternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularityof such likeminded bands as Korn and the Deftones. Vocalist SerjTankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummerJohn Dolmayan formed System of a Down in southern California in themid-'90s. They quickly earned a strong following in Los Angeles, largely based on strong word of mouth. A three-song demo begancirculating through metal collectors, and their fan base soon spreadthroughout not only America, but Europe and New Zealand.
By the end of 1997, the group had signed to American, thendistributed by Columbia Records. American/Columbia released the group'seponymous debut album in the summer of 1998, securing the band openingspots on the Slayer and Ozzfest tours. System eventually went gold, andset up the September 2001 release of the even more ambitious Toxicity.System's second effort was another heavy music triumph, shaming themajority of their nu-metal competition and running away withmulti-platinum honors. The quartet didn't slow down. Malakian startedthe eatURmusic imprint and Tankian a label called Serjical Strike;Tankian also collaborated with Armenian avant-garde folk musician ArtoTuncboyaciyan in a project called Serart. In November 2002 Systemissued the bare-bones but no less powerful odds 'n' ends set Steal ThisAlbum!; they also remained politically active.
By 2004, System of a Down was back in the studio with Rick Rubin. The bold result of those sessions was a single, epic album released intwo parts. Mezmerize/Hypnotize kept System's furious creativity alive, incorporating the wild vocal melodies, lyrical passion, and rabidstructural shifts that had become their trademark. Mezmerize, or partone, appeared in May 2005, while Hypnotize, its final section, appearedlater in the year, and both hit the top of the album charts.

Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel (Mp3 Download)
Review by Andy Kellman @ allmusic.com
When Ultra was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have forgotten about Songs of Faith andDevotion. When Exciter was declared the best Depeche Mode album sinceViolator, those who said so must have also forgotten about Songs ofFaith and Devotion, in addition to having found a roundabout way ofsaying that it was merely better than Ultra. There's no doubt thistime: Playing the Angel is both the band's best album since Violatorand, more significantly, an album that is near Violator in stature. Thebiggest clue dropped by the band prior to its release was a quote fromDave Gahan, who said that being in Depeche Mode is better than it hasbeen in 15 years. Some quick math reveals that Gahan was hinting at theViolator era, a time when the band's creativity and popularity peakedsynchronously. It also turns out that this is a time as good as anyother to be paying attention to the band. Playing the Angel lacks Songsof Faith and Devotion's end-to-end chest-beating, Ultra's grindingmurk, and Exciter's desiccated patches. It takes the best qualitiesfrom those releases, combines them with a few subtle allusions toViolator -- tiptoeing the border that separates retread fromreinvention -- and makes for a highly concentrated set of songs thatall but demand to be heard in one uninterrupted shot. Gahan, stillriding the confidence he gained as a songwriter from Paper Monsters, his 2003 solo debut, contributes three songs co-written with bandassociates Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott. Though none of themvie to be the album's centerpiece, it's apparent that the move wasn't aconcession of desperation on anyone's part. The friendly competitionseems to have kicked chief songwriter Martin Gore into high gear; he'sin top form. Musically, a lot of analog gear was used, and it'sapparent that the arrangements and extra sounds were less fussed overthan they have been in the recent past. You get the sense thateverything fell into place, as opposed to being forced or aimlesslymanipulated. Despite the favoring of older gear, there's no other yearin which any of the songs could've been made. Like the best DepecheMode, almost everything on the album will make an initial wowing impactwhile remaining layered enough in subtle details to surprise and thrillwith repeated listens. It is not the kind of album a 25-year-old bandis supposed to make.
