MUTANT SOUNDS

Univers Zero - Heresie,LP,1979,Belgium

Univers Zero are an instrumental Belgian band known for playing darkmusic heavily influenced by 20th century chamber music. The band wasformed in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis. For a time they were part of amusical movement called Rock in Opposition (RIO) which strove to createdense challenging music, a direct contrast to the disco and punk musicbeing produced in the late 1970s. Obvious early influences were Bartókand Stravinsky however the band also cited less well known composerssuch as Albert Huybrechts, who was also Belgian.
Their early albumswere almost entirely acoustic but with later releases their soundbecame more electric. In 1977 they released their first album 1313 onwhich the members played with a heavy rock and roll approach despitethe fact that the instrumentation was largely acoustic. This is mostlydue to the use of drums. Two years later the album Heresie proved to beeven darker. It has been called some of the scariest music evercommitted to record.
Subsequent albums lightened the sound onlyslightly, but became ever more electric. Whereas early albums featuredoboes, spinets, harmoniums and mellotrons their 1980s albums tended torely more on synthesizer and electric guitar. Despite these changestheir overall sound remained fairly consistent.
The group disbandedin 1987, but reformed in 1999. In the interim drummer Daniel Denisreleased two solo albums and joined Art Zoyd, a similar band fromFrance. Since 1999, Univers Zéro have released three albums. Fans citethat these albums have lost some of the oppressing feel of the earlymaterial, and that the songs are generally much shorter, but they werenevertheless received enthusiastically.
Other than the abovementioned Art Zoyd there are not many similar groups. Some that areremotely similar include Present (a UZ offshoot), Apocalyptica (moreheavy metal influenced), Bohren & der Club of Gore (more jazzy),After Crying and Rachel's (both of which are much lighter in tone).
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univers_Zero
A review Aviolent masterpiece which draws parallels with the "sound of themonolith" (György Ligeti's Lux Aeterna) in terms of its broodingdespair, foreboding, languid drones and phased expression. I mentionLigeti because from the Romanian composer (and the other modernistscomparable to him), Univers Zero seems to derive.
This beingpossibly the greatest of the original RIO bands and this being one oftheir two masterpieces, this is a good starting point for a newcomerinto such music. However, approach with caution. This is trulyhorrifying music and only repeated listens will allow you to embrace itin the way many of they who foam at the mouth with superlatives havedone. It's nightmarish music. In the same way that Toby Driver is JeffBuckley after too much LSD, David Lynch and avant-modern classicalmusic, Univers Zero is a chamber ensemble after having listened to toomany of Glenn Branca's cacophonies; all odd time meters and offbeatsyncopation.
It's the dictionary definition of the macabre; a culmination of everything dissonance could be used for and much more, too.
An absolute masterpiece! http://mutant-sounds.blogspot.com/2007/02/univers-zero-heresielp1979belgium.html

The Wall (Bootleg) (1982)

Pink Floyd - The Wall is a 1982 MGM film by British director Alan Parker based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album The Wall. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters. Though Waters initially considered himself for the lead role, the film ultimately starred Bob Geldof, whose character Pink was loosely based on the biographies of both Waters and former Pink Floyd vocalist and guitarist Syd Barrett, both of whom were founding members of the band. The film also stars Kevin McKeon as the young Pink, and includes brief appearances by Bob Hoskins and Joanne Whalley.

The film is highly metaphorical and is rich in symbolic imagery and sound. It features virtually no dialogue and a non-linear storylinewhich is progressed entirely through Pink Floyd's lyrical music. Someconsider it to be a long music video for the entire album. The onlysongs from the album not used in the film are Hey You(although material using the song was filmed and the raw footage wasfirst made available on the DVD release as a deleted scene), The Show Must Go On, and Is There Anybody Out There?

The film is scattered throughout with fifteen minutes of elaborate animation sequences by the political cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe, who played a central role in developing the overall aesthetic of the production. The animation sequences include a bold and nightmarish vision of war, specifically of the German bombing campaign over England during World War II, set to the song "Goodbye Blue Sky".

RogerWaters has expressed dissatisfaction with the final product of thefilm, and is reported to have been philosophically at odds withdirector Alan Parker during filming, who himself walked out of theproject on multiple occasions due to the conflict. In a 1988 interview on Australian radio,Waters said: "I was a bit disappointed with it in the end, because atthe end of the day I felt no sympathy at all with the lead character...and I found it was so unremitting in its onslaught upon the senses,that... it didn't actually give me... as an audience, a chance to getinvolved with it." [1]Despite Waters' dissatisfaction, the film is considered by many fans tobe a worthy interpretation of Pink Floyd's album, and a powerful workof cinema in its own right.

David Gilmour stated that the makingof the film was where the feud between him and Waters started. Gilmouralso stated on the documentary Behind The Wall (which was aired on BBCTV and VH1 in the US) that "the movie was the less successful tellingof The Wall story as opposed to the album and concert versions".

Voodoobilly from Hell! "Darkerthan anything you ever listened to! Combine Chris Isaak & JoyDivision send them to Hell and what you get is Deadbolt! The scariestBand of the world!" - "badsardine" (NRW)

Deadbolt "Voodoo Trucker" 2000 Everynow and then a band comes along that takes a few seemingly unrelatedgenres and finds a way to tie them together on an album; from theopening notes of "Billy's Dead," one's apt to have the lurking feelingof darkness until the tongue-in-cheek lyrics begin. San Diego'sDeadbolt continues its tradition of theme-based recordings with VoodooTrucker, an offering full of stories of death, curses, andtruckers-gone-wrong. Imagine the Ventures playing spooky surf musicbehind a dry,Dragnet-style narrative of both supernatural tales andeveryday trucker situations. Songs such as "the Mocker" and "Let'sTruck" contain conversations as spoken through C.B. radios, while"Whereabouts Unknown" describes many C.B. radio terms and lingo overthe top of clean, slinky guitar lines and a thick, driving bass.Because the approach, tempo, and key never changes throughout thealbum, there's not much variation, and a lack of any challenging guitarleads may leave some listeners flat; however, the music itself is moreabout creating a moody atmospheric background for the Edgar AllanPoe-like stories, and, on most of the songs, it comes together quitewell. "Truck Driving S.O.B." is one of the more catchy tunes, characterizing the typical habits and lifestyle commonly associatedwith truckers, while "McGortsy" delves into a twisted tale of murderand bodies hanging from trees. A dark sense of humor accompanied with astark musical landscape definitely makes this one of Deadbolt's moreintriguing and entertaining releases. ~ Ian Trumbull, All Music Guide

Velvet Underground - Everything You Ever Heard About The Velvet Underground

http://chocoreve.blogspot.com/2007/02/velvet-underground-everything-you-ever.html

Velvet Underground - At the Warhol Museum 1966-01-03

Recordedby Andy Warhol just a week after the German actress Nico had arrived inAmerica. This tape features what may have been the first musicalcollaboration between her and the Velvet Underground. The tapes featuremany casual moments of unstructured jamming common to rock bandrehearsals. Most of this material falls in line with what can beassumed to be influences of the key members; Older Blues, R&B,Rockabilly etc. However, there is one time on the tapes when either LouReed or Sterling Morrison can be heard playing the lead intro to "DayTripper" by the Beatles. While this may seem like a standard today, itwas a 4 month old song when the tape was made. On Track two, Lou Reedcan be heard teaching lyrics to Nico while the rest of the band playsin the background. The lyrics are to the song "Venus In Furs." Track 11features the whole band with Nico attempting to sing the song "ThereShe Goes Again." They try several times to find a key that suits Nico'svoice. Nico tries many times to vocalize lyrics that prove to be toofast for her broken English to master. These problems evidently werenever solved, as the song appears on the first album with Lou Reedsinging lead - not Nico.

[1996] DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... (Mp3 Download)

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
As a suburban Californian kid, DJShadow tended to treat hip-hop as a musical innovation, not as anexplicit social protest, which goes a long way toward explaining whyhis debut album Endtroducing... sounded like nothing else atthe time of its release. Using hip-hop, not only its rhythms but itscut-and-paste techniques, as a foundation, Shadow created a deep, endlessly intriguing world on Endtroducing, one where there areno musical genres, only shifting sonic textures and styles. Shadowcreated the entire album from samples, almost all pulled from obscure, forgotten vinyl, and the effect is that of a hazy, half-familiar dream-- parts of the record sound familiar, yet it's clear that it onlysuggests music you've heard before, and that the multi-layered samplesand genres create something new. And that's one of the keys to thesuccess of Endtroducing -- it's innovative, but it builds on asolid historical foundation, giving it a rich, multi-faceted sound. It's not only a major breakthrough for hip-hop and electronica, but forpop music.

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show - Cover Of The Rolling Stone (1973)

Dr.Hook & the Medicine Show's sardonic, country-flavored pop/rock madethem one of the most fondly remembered acts of AM pop radio's heyday inthe '70s. Although the band had a reputation as a mouthpiece forhumorist Shel Silverstein, who supplied several of their biggest hits(including "The Cover of Rolling Stone"), they didn't rely exclusivelyon his material by any means. And, during their peak years, they werejust as famed for their crazed stage antics, which ranged from surrealbanter to impersonating their own opening acts.

The band wasformed in Union City, NJ, in 1968, when a young singer/songwriter namedDennis Locorriere teamed up with Alabama-born country-rocker RaySawyer. Sawyer's distinctive stage presence stemmed from his enormouscowboy hat and an eye patch that hid injuries from a serious caraccident in 1967. Sharing the spotlight on guitar and lead vocals, theduo teamed up with Sawyer's bandmates from a group called the ChocolatePapers: George Cummings (lead and steel guitars), Billy Francis(keyboards), and Popeye Phillips (drums). Phillips soon moved home toAlabama and was replaced by local drummer John "Jay" David. Sawyer'seye patch inspired the nickname Dr. Hook, after the Captain Hookcharacter in Peter Pan; with the rest of the band christened theMedicine Show (a possible drug reference), they began playing some ofthe roughest bars in the Union City area, concentrating mostly oncountry music out of sheer necessity. Anxious to find a more hospitableenvironment, the band recorded some demos, and in early 1970 theirmanager played the tapes for Ron Haffkine, who was working as musicaldirector for the film Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying ThoseTerrible Things About Me? Haffkine had been looking for bands toperform the songs written for the soundtrack by Shel Silverstein, anex-folkie, Playboy cartoonist, and children's author who'd pennedJohnny Cash's hit "A Boy Named Sue." He took an instant liking toLocorriere's voice, and became the group's manager and producer, signing them to record "Last Morning" for the film soundtrack and alsolanding a deal with CBS.

Silverstein wrote all the songs for Dr.Hook & the Medicine Show's self-titled debut album, which wasreleased in 1971. The single "Sylvia's Mother," a subtle parody ofteen-heartbreak weepers, flopped on first release, but with some morepromotional muscle became the band's first million-seller and hit theTop Five in the summer of 1972 (even if many listeners took it assincere). That year, the band added a full-time bassist in JanceGarfat, as well as another lead guitarist, Rik Elswit. Their secondalbum, Sloppy Seconds, was again written by Silverstein, and featuredmore risqué material, perhaps in response to the success of "Sylvia'sMother." "The Cover of Rolling Stone," written specifically to get theband featured on same, became another Top Ten smash in early 1973, andRolling Stone soon granted the band's wish.

However, following it up proved difficult. Drummer David left the group in 1973,to be replaced by John Wolters; the title of their next album, BellyUp, was unfortunately prophetic, and the band filed for bankruptcy in1974 (partly as a way to get out of their contract with CBS).

Nowknown simply as Dr. Hook, they signed with Capitol in 1975, debutingwith Bankrupt, which began to feature more group originals. A cover ofSam Cooke's "Only Sixteen" returned them to the Top Ten in 1976 andrevitalized their career; although Cummings left the band that year, further hits followed over the next few years in "A Little Bit More,""Sharing the Night Together," "When You're in Love With a Woman," and"Sexy Eyes." 1979's Pleasure & Pain became their first gold album, cementing the band's transition into disco-tinged balladeers. However,Elswit had to leave the band for a year after developing cancer; he wasreplaced by Bob "Willard" Henke, who remained in the lineup afterElswit's return. Ray Sawyer, however, did not; dissatisfied with theirnewly commercial direction, he departed in 1980, robbing Dr. Hook of,well, Dr. Hook. With Rod Smarr replacing Henke, the remainder of theband switched from Capitol to Casablanca, with very little success;after a few bill-paying tours, they finally gave up the ghost in 1985.Locorriere became a session and touring vocalist, backing Randy Travisin 1989, and in 1996 recorded the solo LP Running With Scissors. Sawyerstill tours under the Dr. Hook name, though he licenses it fromLocorriere. Drummer Wolters died of cancer in 1997. ( Read more - More ... - Wikipedia )

Theband's second single, "Cover of the Rolling Stone" from "SloppySeconds" attracted the attention of those who would appreciate theirirreverent attitude and stage show. It also got the band on the coverof Rolling Stone - a caricature rather than a photograph. In the UnitedKingdom the BBC Radio network refused to play "Cover of the RollingStone," as it was considered advertising a trademark name, which wasagainst the BBC's policy. The song was rereleased with a host of BBCDJs shouting 'On the cover of the Radio Times!' over the band's vocalsin the choruses (you can still hear the fellas back there, singing theoriginal words). The song was released as "Cover of the Radio Times"for the UK market. The BBC found no problem in playing the record, since they published the Radio Times, weekly. The single found realcult staus after that.

In a business that has made the mistakeof taking itself so bloody serious, it is so refreshing to hearsomething that's just plain and slimple fun. Even more than 30 yearslater this track still manages to bring a smile to my face. YouTube Clip Live sup sem http://rockgems.blogspot.com/2007/02/dr-hook-and-medicine-show-cover-of.html#links

Dynamic Helsinki Finland instrumental band serves up a mad meltdown of biker-fuzz, psychedelia and soulful organ groove...

...free your mind, throw away that straitjacket and get down!

Hypnomen "Trip With Satan" 2000 Whilequite a short release with only 8 tracks and just over 24 minutes, thisis another step forward from their adventurous Watusi 99 CD. Half go-gofuzz and half psychedelic coolness, this release is a cool blend of theEuropean and Hollywood views of the San Francisco scene. Yet it lacksthe cheesy imitation quality that might imply, but rather is wellthough out, nicely arranged, and quite enjoyable. Another goodinstrumental bet from a fine Finish band. - Phil Dirt at Reverb Central(link in the sitebar!)

The Hypnomen are:
Pekka Laine (guitar, electric sitar); Jan Gron (guitar, bass); Sami Nieminen (Hammondorgan); Juha Litmanen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jansku(vocals); Jan Pethman (bongos, congas, cowbells). Recorded at HideoutStudios, Helsinki, Finland in February 2000

Je třeba prznit a znásilňovat pop kulturu, aby vrhla další odporné zmetky a hybridní bastardy.
