Vive La Revolution - DJ Cut Killer

Reallypleased with the comments so far - keep them coming people! Going tostick with Sendspace for the moment but let me know if you areexperiencing problems downloading.

Wanted to switch it up withthis next post so have turned my attention to the other side of the bigblue expanse that separates the US from Europe. DJ Cut Killer is astalwart of the French hip hop scene and was first brought to myattention in a film called 'La Haine' that was originally released in1995. The film follows three french youths of varied racial/culturaldescent and documents their lives in the wake of riots in the outskirtsof Paris. It is wonderfully shot and heavily ingrained in hop hopculture featuring breakdancing scenes and a mysterious DJ scratchingthe shit out of KRS' 'Sound of da Police' vocal over a beat thatsamples Edith Piaf's 'Je Ne Regrette Rien' . That DJ is Cut Killer.Needless to say, it left a distinct impression upon me and I considerthe film to be a must-see.

Cut Killer began as many scratch DJsdo: battling hard on the DMC circuit. From here he progressed to someof his own production work and is probably the most prolific of allFrench turntablists in terms of mixtape output. These are of a variablequality (not as a result of his skills which are unquestionably deep)due to some strange track selections which often feature the morecommercial side of American R 'n' B. If that's your thang then cop his'Cut Killer Soul Party' series as they are dedicated to exactly thatstyle of content but they have never really drawn my interest. The twoalbums featured today however are prime examples of a highly skilled DJblending, juggling and scratching classic beats with the added intrigueof French joints that would otherwise have escaped my attention.

Thebeauty of these mixes is that they have a live feel. They seem raw andspontaneous: no post-production fiddling here. There is a cohesive mixof the styles from either side of the Atlantic although some of thefreestyle sections lose impact after the first couple of minutes.Generally speaking, Cut Killer knows when to stop and let the musicspeak for itself. Particularly impressive is the Das EFX section of'Menage a 3' that features a variety of boom bap classics linked bylyrical references that hint towards the next beat.

France hasalways struck me as a country that easily embraced hip hop culturewithout the crisis of identity that I believe has affected othernations outside of the US. I intend to post other French hip hop in thefuture: keep me bookmarked 'mes amis'.

Scratch Perverts + Rawkus = Bangin'

Around'98/'99 I was getting into turntablism in a big way and at that timethe Scratch Perverts were the kings of the UK scene. They weretechnically stronger than anyone else as well as keeping it funky, andeventually went on to innovate the artform with feedback techniquesthat had never been seen before.

Simultaneous to this, Rawkusstepped into the limelight with a plethora of releases that broughtquality underground hip hop back to the masses. I remember snapping upalmost anything that had the Rawkus name stamped on the cover: it wasan almost definite indicator of a slammin' release. Never before had Ihad such confidence in a contemporary label and I can only imagine whatit was like for rap music fans during the golden age when Def Jam andTommy Boy were at the height of their powers. Of course, things turnedsour for the label around 2000, but it seems like they might be makinga resurgence; let's hope so.

Given away with HHC, 'The Cleaner'features a selection of the Rawkus classics from this era and lets thePerverts work their magic on them. Featuring cuts from Ripshop, MrComplex and Common as well as others, this is a seemless mix thatdemonstrates the skill of the Perverts whilst still allowing theselections to shine. Perhaps the most technically striking moment in'The Cleaner' is the outro to Shabam Sahdeeq's 'Every Rhyme I Write':pure turntablism genius. I'm not sure what the exact Perverts line-upwas at this stage as they have been through several incarnations, but Isuspect that this was after the departure of Mr Thing and First Ratebut before the re-induction of Scotland's Plus One.

I'm alsoposting a couple of mixes taken from a John Peel radio session coutesyof Sconeboy. First up is Prime Cuts followed by Mr Thing (my favouriteUK DJ of all time). I would estimate that these were recorded c. '98 asthe Prime Cuts section features his 'Jack Of Spades' juggle which hewas busting out at both the DMCs and ITFs around that time. Both mixesare of an exceptional standard featuring classic hip hop joints as wellas the odd well known break.

Hate to sound jaded already, but ifyou download either of these mixes then please drop a comment. I knowthat people are downloading on a daily basis and yet only a smallselection of people are talking! It's pathetic I know, but it does makea difference to my day...

Live From Japan - DJ Krush

Backin '95 the name Mo Wax was synonymous with quality. Early releasespromised much and made the label a collector's dream: limited presses, fantastic artwork and most importantly, bangin' music. James Lavelle'soutfit could possibly be cited as the originators of the 'trip hop' tag(a term that I despise) as the releases around this time were basicallydownbeat or more abstract hip hop instrumentals. DJ Krush fittedperfectly into this niche, producing brooding sonic landscapes routedin hip hop but with a futuristic and forward-thinking edge. For mymoney, 'Meiso' is his seminal work.

The album features bothinstrumental joints as well as some impressive mic collaborations.Black Thought and Malik B's verses on the title track are exceptionaland CL Smooth comes correct on the album opener 'Only The StrongSurvive'. I'm not as keen on the Big Shug and Guru track; the beatlacks the moody atmosphere that complements the MCs so well on theaforementioned cuts, and the overall vibe leaves me feeling a littlecold. Still, the names speak for themselves: these are well written andexpertly delivered rhymes that work well over Krush's accomplishedproduction skills.

Worthy of a special mention is 'Duality'.This tune passed me by for a long time as the opening two minutes issome of Krush's less inspiring work. It simply doesn't carry the weightof some of the other tracks and lacks punch. However, everythingchanges after three minutes. Snares break out in an eruption ofpercussive noise before dropping into the DJ Shadow produced section ofthe song which is nothing short of sensational. Scratched horns floatover rippling drums and the momentum is relentless. This is Shadow athis best: I could listen to this all day and my head would still benodding as it hit the pillow.

Later Krush works becomeincreasingly minimal and stray away from the drum heavy tracks thatconstitute the finest beats on this album. In doing so, he loses thesense of rawness that is so compelling on this release. Still, this isa powerful and at times gripping album that demonstrates that itdefinitely ain't where you're from, it's where you're at.

Matisyahu - No Place to Be

#fullpost {display:none;}

WhenMatisyahu emerged with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, in2004, his musical persona seemed to some a novelty. Here was a HasidicJew, dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over ayarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard, who neverthelessperformed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism overreggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica, punctuatinghis performances with stage diving. It may have seemed like a joke atfirst, but Matisyahu was serious, and he began to attract press noticesto go with the enthusiastic audiences that packed his concerts.Matisyahu was born Matthew Miller on June 30, 1979, in West Chester,PA, although his family moved to Berkeley, CA, when he was a childbefore settling in White Plains, NY. He was given a traditional Jewishupbringing, against which he rebelled at first, considering himself aDeadhead and a hippie by his early teens. But at the age of 14, duringa camping trip in Colorado, he reconciled himself to Judaism and soonafter visited Israel. After returning to White Plains, he dropped outof high school and traveled the country to attend Phish concerts. Backat home again, he agreed to let his parents send him to a wildernessschool in Bend, OR, where he became enamored of reggae and hip-hop, andbegan rapping at open-mike competitions. He returned to New York at 19to attend the New School for Social Research in Manhattan, but alsojoined the Carlebach Shul, a synagogue where his musical interests wereencouraged. Meeting a Lubavitch rabbi, he became interested in thestrict Lubavitch Hasidic sect of Judaism and renamed himself Matisyahu.Continuing to perform, Matisyahu assembled a backing band consisting ofAaron Dugan (guitar), Josh Werner (bass), and Jonah David (drums). Theyrecorded Shake Off the Dust...Arise, released by JDub Records in 2004.A concert held in Austin, TX, on February 19, 2005, yielded thefollow-up release, Live at Stubb's, which was released by Or Music onApril 19, 2005, then picked up for national distribution by EpicRecords, a division of major-label Sony BMG, which reissued it onAugust 23, 2005, as Matisyahu toured around the country and prepared asecond studio album produced by Bill Laswell. The final product, Youth, appeared in March of 2006. A simultaneously released dub version of thealbum was made available exclusively to mail order customers. Thesinger's backing band named themselves Roots Tonic and released RootsTonic Meets Bill Laswell in May and by the end of the year the EP/DVDcombo No Place to Be was released. The CD featured a cover version ofthe Police's "Message in a Bottle" along with some remixes while theDVD featured interviews and a concert recorded in Israel.

James Brown - Messing With The Blues

from Chocoreve  by bzh555 Most know James Brown as the Godfather ofSoul and one of the forefathers of R&B. But in the late 50's andearly 60's JB took a pause for the cause and paid his respects to thelikes of Memphis Slim, Louis Jordan, Chuck Willis, Bobby "Blue" Bland,Little Willie John and others that laid the foundation for what becamethe blues. Make no mistake about it, JB does not in anyway imitatethese great performers but instead, interprets these songs with thepowerful voice and antics that eventually made JB famous. In fact, while this is a tribute to the blues, the style here leans heavilytoward R&B. There is some great stuff here including the heartfeltintroduction "Like It Is, Like It Was" and "Somebody Done Changed TheLock On My Door".
