Spank Rock appear to revel in contradictions. Rapper Naeem Juwan andproduction phenom XXXChange (Alex Epton) are an American group whorecord for the British flag-waving label Big Dada, they're the onlyunderground rappers to talk about sex more often and more explicitlythan Black Eyed Peas, and their tracks accept the limitations ofold-school rap and bass music, but boast an agility that makes themsound positively post-millennial. Sex is all over this record,appearing on nearly every track, from the "ass-shaking competitionchamp" in "Back Yard Betty" to the 50 Cent-style partying going onduring "Coke & Wet." Virtually every track — notable exception:"Rick Rubin" — either references or focuses in on what you learn inanatomy and apply in life. Juwan may sound like a juvenile Q-Tip (minusthe abstract rapping), but he's one of the brightest young Americantalents of the mid-2000s, using his voice in delightful ways (somehelped along by post-production). Meanwhile, on the production end,XXXChange concocts a series of deep bass hits, digital claps, and theoccasional cougar scream to recall the type of stark, echoingproductions and drum programming rarely heard since the mid-'80s. It'sall performed so perfectly, and informed so well by Juwan's lyricalfinesse, that the vintage feel never seems like a crutch. Best of allis "Bump," where first Juwan takes a few minutes for a speed rap, thenguest Amanda Blank enters halfway through, initially giving one of herstiffest Roxanne Shanté impressions but, in a heartbeat, shifting intoa higher gear like a sports car blowing away the competition.

Faith No More's 1997 release Album of the Yearfeatured the talents of another new guitarist, Jon Hudson, who replacedDean Menta (Menta only toured with the group in support of King for a Day before being dismissed). Like King for a Day, Albumis more straightforward musically than past releases and remains one ofFNM's most focused and concise works. Recorded in bassist Billy Gould'shome studio, Album of the Year would turn out to be their laststudio recording before splitting up in 1997. A trio of outstandingtracks -- "Stripsearch," "Last Cup of Sorrow," and "Ashes to Ashes" --blend hard rock and pop melodicism the way only FNM can, while"Helpless" is an unpredictable composition that alternates betweenheavy guitar riffing and Mike Patton's tempered vocals. The explosivealbum opener, "Collision," and "Naked in Front of the Computer" showthat the band can still compose prime heavy rockers, while othermusical forms were included as well (the romantic ballad "She Loves MeNot," the evil boogie of "Home Sick Home," and the Middle Easternsounds of "Mouth to Mouth"). For the gripping album closer, "Pristina,"the '90s turmoil in Yugoslavia is used as a backdrop for a tale oflovers being separated due to war. Album of the Year was a fitting way for one of alt-rock's most influential and important bands to end its career.
