JOSHUA "Gold Cosmos" LP 2001 (US)
JoshuaBurkett was a member of the TOWER RECORDINGS collective. Here is hissecond album, an all-underground star collaboration featuring amongothers Chris Corsano, Dredd Foole, Ben Chasney, PG Six, Cynthia Meadowsand Matt Valentine.
"Gold Cosmos" is a stunning work, away fromconventional folk structures with an archaic twist that soundsunmistakably cosmic. Built primarily of layers of acoustic guitarteased with other instrumentation, it starts from a clear Bernt Janschinfluence to gradually mutate towards this religious feel of ecstaticdelieverance found in mid 70ies POPOL VUH albums. Joshua uses his voiceinfrequently and rather as a backing instrument than a focal point. There is also a heavy TOWER RECORDINGS influence on the irregularrepetitive patterns that are often punctuated by odd vocal samples, bells, harp, or quietly laid percussion.
A masterpiece of mantric quality!

Sachiko M - Sine Wave Solo (@256)
As it suggests, extremes of duration high and low frequencies, silences, disruption made only of sine tones. [ReR]
Duringthe summer of 1998, Japanese experimental artist Sachiko M radicallychanged her musical approach. A few months earlier she was mostlyworking with samplers (as is exemplified on another Amoebic release, Four Focuses), like Ikue Mori and Diane Labrosse. Then, in September she recorded this Sine Wave Solo, pioneering the re-entry of sine wave generators, the most basic form ofelectronic sound, in avant-garde music. This CD contains 40 minutes ofsine waves, gradually moving from rich and complex material (the opener"Don't Move") to numbingly minimal pieces. Some people react physicallyto sine waves and they may experience discomfort (such as nausea)during "Don't Touch," 10 minutes of high-pitched non-modulating tones, and "Don't Stop," nine minutes of sub-audible low warbles. The lasttrack, "Don't Do," is made of one ear-piercing high tone turned on andoff while an additional filter is also being turned on and off. Theseare extremely minimal experiments, interesting for their completerejection of technology, but profoundly displeasing, even for the mostdedicated and understanding avant-garde fan, with the exception of thefirst two tracks. These are enjoyable, especially "Don't Ask": SachikoM uses very short low tones to construct a glitch-like groove at a timewhen glitch artists were still learning how to use a laptop. Her sinewaves would be put to better use in group context, like Otomo Yoshihide's I.S.O. and Cathode projects. As the years go by, Sine Wave Solo remains an item interesting only for the completist, the collector, and the masochist. [AMG]

Fearsome Sealife - Feel EP (@128)
Recorded in 1990. Dreamy. Haunting.Visionary guitarist, Waco Winkle, who normally astounds with hispsychedelic, acid-drenched washes, plays bass on this disorienting EP.J. Guggino's sifted drumming & Jaime C's minimalistic chimingguitar is prominent on this recording. Her style conjures up asubcontinent of aquatic mesmerity which both perfectly compliments& rivals Winkle's throbbing bass-playing. A hypnotic blend of fragility. Plunging seascapes of Wonder . Will truly astound. Highly recommended!!!

Thisexcellent compilation of Tudor's most historic performances ofavant-garde and minimalist piano compositions features works by JohnCage, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, and Sylvano Bussotti. Mostlypresenting material from the mid-50s and early 60's, this is anessential document of David Tudor the pianist. "From 1950 until around1965, David Tudor was the epitome of the pianist who could simply playanything. In fact, David Tudor was no longer a name, but an indicationfor instrumentation as dozens of pieces were written "for David Tudor".As early as 1960, after having conquered all of the challenges posed byserial piano music, Tudor began to differentiate between composers whofilled him with life and those who left him cold - the focus of hisrepertory became crystallized. The main criterion for his choices wereshaped by the part he would play as interpreter in the composition. Hedistinguished carefully between having a free choice amongprefabricated parts - generally called aleatoric, as for example,Stockhausen's Klavierstück XI (dedicated, as his Klavierstücke V-VIII,to Tudor) - and indeterminate actions."-Edition Rz
